Usually I despise my Theories of Rhetoric book because it's incredibly dull and that is still the case today, however, it did provide a few minutes worth of entertainment. I'm reading about Plato and one of the pieces he wrote when I come across the following sentences:

The speech is from a man who is attracted to a boy but instead of professing his love openly argues that not only does he not love the boy, but that a nonlover such as himself is the sort of person with whom one should associate. We may think of the speech as a sort of clever seduction strategy.
Readers of the dialogue today may think in narrowly sexual terms about this subject matter of the speech. That would be a mistake.

Now, how is a yaoi fangirl supposed to keep her mind on Plato and his beliefs on rhetoric when this is in her text book????

Ancient Greeks...the original fangirls...I mean boys. They were all about shota though; as soon as the boy started sprouting hair, he couldn't be touched *remembers that from one history class, hasn't forgotten it*.

Think of the armies too! Especially the Spartans, they were encouraged to have sex with the other guys in the army to strengthen the bonds between them. Most were forced to take wives because they didn't want to. They were more comfortable with men.

I should stop now. I could go on for hours.

*laughs* I do remember that, but I was reading about rhetoric! I wasn't expecting it so it sort of short-cicuited my brain. ^_^

You know, I expect this kind of lesson from our historian aka Liz. It was fun to read though.

And yes... I just noticed that the first time I submitted this it showed up as anonymous for some unknown reason...

Oh the Greeks! One of my teachers once said that the term "platonic love" originally meant love between two guys. Not sure if that's true but it wouldn't surprise me one single bit.

This reminds me of when i was taking anthropology. While pouring over my notes after reading too much Star Wars slash one fine day, I came across the term "Homo Erectus". I think you can guess where my filthy, dirty mind went with THAT!

I was told that "platonic love" got its name because Plato believed frienship aka non-physical love to be the highest. I like your version better. ^_^

OMG! I know exactly where your mind went.
