Usually I despise my Theories of Rhetoric book because it's incredibly dull and that is still the case today, however, it did provide a few minutes worth of entertainment. I'm reading about Plato and one of the pieces he wrote when I come across the following sentences:
The speech is from a man who is attracted to a boy but instead of professing his love openly argues that not only does he not love the boy, but that a nonlover such as himself is the sort of person with whom one should associate. We may think of the speech as a sort of clever seduction strategy.
Readers of the dialogue today may think in narrowly sexual terms about this subject matter of the speech. That would be a mistake.
Now, how is a yaoi fangirl supposed to keep her mind on Plato and his beliefs on rhetoric when this is in her text book????
Think of the armies too! Especially the Spartans, they were encouraged to have sex with the other guys in the army to strengthen the bonds between them. Most were forced to take wives because they didn't want to. They were more comfortable with men.
I should stop now. I could go on for hours.
